Global Routes is a non-profit organization that promotes global understanding through intercultural global exchange. Global Routes sends over 200 North American students abroad every year to volunteer in 15 countries throughout the world. The organization has been a pioneer in the field of service learning trips and the New York Times has cited Global Routes as “one of the most respected organizations in the field.”
There are three distinct phases to each Global Routes trip: the in-country orientation, the community service and cultural exchange, and the final travel adventure. Upon arriving, students receive at least a five to eight day introduction to the country through outdoor adventure training and visits to local sites. The second phase is the backbone of the Global Routes experience: a two week community-stay. During this period, students live in a village with either a host family or the group and participate in a service project in partnership with the local community. Past projects have included building schools, digging wells, and crafting education projects for the local children. Following the homestay, the students travel through the country for four to six days participating in group activities and reflecting upon their experiences.
Each Global Routes trip is comprised of 14-18 students and two qualified guides. For many students, the trip is their first time abroad, so the leaders will help guide them through the experience. Participating in Global Routes cultural exchange gives students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves into a foreign culture.
